According to the U.S. EPA drinking water contaminated with lead is one of the greatest health threats given that an estimated 55,000,000 homes still have plumbing and/or lead solder still in use. In addition, the U.S. EPA estimates that approximately 30,000,000 homes likely have concentrations of lead present in the drinking water that exceeds the 15 parts per billion regulatory level. Elevated levels of lead have been shown to cause blindness, retardation, comas and in extreme cases death.
